Asphalt shingles are by far the most common roofing material used for residential roofing applications. They are easy to install, relatively affordable, last 20 to 50 years and are recyclable in some areas. Asphalt shingles come in a large number of styles and colours.
Cedar shingles are sawn from wood blocks. They are tapered and generally have a smooth surface. Cedar shingles have uniform thickness, appearance and width.
Cedar shakes are split from wood blocks; they are less uniform in thickness than shingles, are sometimes grooved, and often have little taper. They have a rustic appearance.
Cedar has natural preservatives that resist moisture, decay and insect damage. It can be used in tough and varied climatic conditions. It has exceptional thermal insulation properties and enables cooler temperatures inside in the summer and warmth in the winter.
Metal roof systems are considered to be one of the highest quality, due to the longevity, durability and lack of maintenance required. The most common type of metal roofing is steel, which may be purchased with an unpainted, galvanized finish or various painted finishes. It is the most popular because of the cost and durability. If life expectancy is taken into consideration, the cost is not really higher than other types of roofing, but the initial cost is significantly higher.
Soffit is the material forming a ceiling from the top of an exterior house wall to the outer edge of the roof. It bridges the gap between a home's siding and the roofline, otherwise known as the eaves. It can be non-ventilated or ventilated to allow the flow of air into the roof area. Ventilation can be provided over the top of the fascia board. Without adequate ventilation, condensation will form in the roof void increasing the risk of timber decay.
The fascia board is the long, straight board that runs along the lower edge of the roof. The fascia is fixed directly to the roof trusses and usually does all the work of supporting the bottom row of tiles and carrying all the guttering.
Siding is the exterior material applied to the walls of a house or other building meant to shed water, protect the walls from the effects of weather, insulate, and is a key in the aesthetics of the structure. Siding may be made of wood, metal, plastic (vinyl), masonry, or composite materials. It may be attached directly to the building structure, or to an intermediate layer of wood (boards, planks, plywood, oriented strand board) called sheathing or sheeting.
Eavestrough is a narrow channel forming the component of a roof system which collects and diverts rainwater away from the roof edge. The main purpose of an eavestrough is to protect a building's foundation by channeling water away from its base. They also helps to reduce erosion, prevents leaks in basements and crawlspaces, protects painted or stained surfaces by reducing exposure to water. Eavestrough can be made from a variety of materials such as cast iron, lead, zinc, galvanised steel, painted steel, copper, painted aluminium, PVC (and other plastics), concrete, stone, and wood.
